Academy Awards 2018
There was a lot to celebrate at the 90th Anniversary Academy Awards. A celebration of diversity was at the center, with several noteworthy nominations, including the first nomination of a female for Best Cinematography, and Jordan Peele’s Get Out win for Best Screenwriting, a film which made audiences take a deep look at the horror of racism. While history was made at the show, the VER team was working hard, supporting Media Servers inside the Dolby Theatre, and LED as well as Media Servers outside on the Oscars Red Carpet.
This was the 5th year VER was asked to support the Red Carpet. A long strip of ROE Hybrid 15 LED, provided by VER, wrapped Hollywood Blvd projecting names of nominees as they strutted down the carpet. The Hybrid tile allowed for the team to include flickering spotlights, which appeared as sparkles to attendees passing by. This 260’ long LED strip wrapped the entire length of the entrance, requiring video mapping a 5,520-pixel wide band of animated content, powered by the VER Media Servers team.
Closer to the Dolby Theatre, projectors hung high above at a steep angle. On the floor, a montage of clips of past winners provided hope to nominees and guest.
This was also the 10th year VER was asked to support the Oscars Main Stage Media Servers. On the main stage, long-time Academy Award client SenovvA consistently delivers an impressive layout of LED and Projection. At the heart of all the content, is Emmy Award Winning Screen’s Coordinator Jason Rudolph of Mobius Productions. Jason is no stranger to the Academy Awards- over the past ten years, Jason has been the Media Server Programmer, managing every pixel and queue which appears on the big screens.
VER’s Matthew Waters assisted Jason with Creative Screens Control services throughout the production. Just like an Oscar envelope, all the LED content must be executed flawlessly without a mistake. Jason spent weeks before the show rendering graphic and video assets, mapping and QC’ing content before the broadcast while the VER Media Servers team provided systems and engineering support.
VER provided Media Servers for the Oscars Main Stage and LED + Media Servers for the Red Carpet.
