Blink-182 ‘California’ 2017 Tour
Blink 182 is considered key to the development of modern pop punk; the band’s combination of pop melodies with fast-paced punk rock featured a more radio-friendly accessibility than prior bands. The trio has sold over thirteen million albums in the United States, and over 50 million albums worldwide.
Upon its July 2016 release, “California” became the band’s second number-one album on the Billboard 200, and first in 15 years; it also reached the top for the first time in the UK, and, its lead single, “Bored to Death”, became the group’s first number one single in 12 years. “California” earned the band their first nomination for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards, and, the band supported the album with a large headlining tour across North America between May and October 2016, a festival run March – May 2017, and a European leg in July through September 2017 – and that’s where VER comes in …
By world tour standards, this was a complex show – one that offered many challenges – and many opportunities – to any world-vendor that was up for a fast-paced experience in multitasking products, technology, and services. Always up and ready for a noteworthy performance, VER was there in full force – as a single vendor that was equipped to offer multiple production disciplines – products, engineering and support service – as a bundled package to the show team.
Cherie “Soup to Nuts” Sturm (VER Account Manager, Sales, Project Manager) coordinated the arrival, set-up and use of cameras, LED, media servers, and video on the equipment side and under ‘services’, there was the provision of VER Creative Screens Control, Video Systems and Production Support teams.
Cherie (modestly) noted that she was ‘all over the show’. “Basically, we did it from soup to nuts, and that is including taking the orders initially, and working out every little detail, from the early sort of ‘getting to know you’ stages of talks to the actual quoting of the job, and all the way to closing the deal. But, that was just the beginning … next was the actual pulling of the order, all the testing and set-up and day-to-day project management. Finally, there was the crewing for the tour, and prepping both legs. And, of course, we went to the first set of shows as we fine-tuned the packages – accommodating changes until everything was picture perfect.”
VER enjoys a long-term and prosperous relationship with Dom Smith and John Lafferty, having achieved great success with a full-service approach to the U.S./North American leg of the tour in 2016.
“Cherie Sturm and the team at VER have been our go-to Video supplier for some time. VER was the obvious choice of Vendor for this project after a successful US tour last year and, once again, VER didn’t let us down. All the kits are fantastic and we had a great team on board to put it all together. Whenever there’s a problem, support is always available and Cherie’s just great at turning our creative ideas into a workable touring product. We can’t really ask for anything more from a vendor!” mentioned Dom.
