Metallica WorldWired Summer Tour
Metallica | VER Tour Sound |Meyer Sound
When it comes to must-see live bands, Metallica ranks as one of the highest. Whether it’s the thunderstorm of drum kicks blasted in “Enter Sandman,” or the shredding guitar solos in “Master of Puppets,” Metallica’s live performances are famous for their heavy-hitting metal rhythms which blast audiences to another dimension, and are executed with absolute perfection. Metallica’s 26-stop WorldWired Summer Tour is no different- packing large stadiums and festivals across the United States, with crowd sizes of 50,000+ at each show.
Metallica’s FOH Engineer “Big Mick” Hughes is known for being the “master” of the front of house “puppet,” supporting the band tour for 33 of the 35 years Metallica’s been touring. For each tour, Hughes looks for the best loudspeaker array. Working with VER Tour Sound Project Manager Jeff Priepot and System Engineer Christopher Nichols, “Big Mick” was given access to a toy store full of PA speaker kit options. Ultimately, the Meyer Sound LEO family was his first choice- and he got it.
“I just love the clarity of LEO,” he says. “It’s a very powerful box that produces a fantastic guitar and vocal sound. Also, having a two-way system, with the crossover point down where it is, keeps everything smooth and sweet in the mid-highs,” said Hughes.
Hughes also took advantage of Meyer Sound’s new VLFC very low-frequency element, producing a ‘kick to the stomach’ shock wave of sound – from 32 hz down to 14 hz. Big Mick Hughes commented “We use the VLFC’s as a special effect to create a realistic experience of an explosion, one that you feel in your chest more than you hear with your ears. When they do the pyro for songs like One the VLFC arrays complete the visual effect. You have the flash of light and then you get the concussion of this massive subsonic wave. It moves a lot of air. You can definitely feel it.”
The Meyer rig, monitors, and speakers all tie into Hughes Midas XL-8 console, supported by a custom VER Tour Sound AVB drive rack and Meyer Galaxy processors.
VER Tour Sound provided all Meyer Sound Leo speakers, systems, rigging, and onsite tour engineering and technical services. “Big Mick” Hughes commented, “This VER supplied Meyer Leo system is like a Ferrari, powerful and precise! It’s certainly a lot of fun to drive!”
Thanks “Big Mick!” We wish you the best of success on this kick ass tour!
