Oliver Bokelberg ASC, BVK is clear, straightforward, and honest — like his images seen on ABC’s thriller Scandal. The series follows political fixer, Olivia Pope, and her team of associates who sacrifice their time and often their morals to handle what they call unimaginable crises. Since shooting the show’s pilot, Bokelberg has worked with the same cast and crew enjoying the making of each episode. As they begin shooting the seventh season, the mega-hit show and its cast have received countless awards and nominations. It’s no wonder they have a die-hard following.
Bokelberg’s approach has always been organic, using natural light whenever possible. This technique he says, “all goes back to studying the painters, and the history of art and photography.”
Although the series has lengthy dialog, Bokelberg is careful to keep it from looking like a “talking head show”. To avoid this he keeps the camera moving, dollying left to right, while zooming as if the camera was wrapping around the actors—a technique he calls, “The Scandal Vortex”.
Never shirking a challenge, Bokelberg and his director constantly strive to add creative elements to the show. This includes a unique concept they have been implementing since the first season, “we started looking in at characters through a window or glass panel, all based on the idea of peeking in on something, as if looking out of the corner of your eye”, he explains. “Sometimes by just catching a glimpse, even the most outrageous things become believable to the audience.”
