Solo: A Star Wars Story
The custom LED installations on Lucasfilm’s Solo: A Star Wars Story were provided by equipment specialist VER. Beyond the lens of Cinematographer Bradford Young, ASC, a number of the high-octane action sequences executed in the blockbuster film were played out against VER LED screens.
Supplying two main rigs at Pinewood Studios UK, the LED installations were used extensively throughout the speeder sequences, adding lighting, effects and movement to assist in delivering the incredible visual energy that accompanied some of the film’s key action scenes.
Collaboration on this latest installment of the Star Wars saga, follows support on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, where the VER team provided multiple LED set-ups to help create the galaxy far, far away. Acting as production liaison from concept to wrap, VER Account Manager Ellie Johnson comments:
“Being involved with any part of the Star Wars franchise is always going to be a huge event and it’s an honor to have worked with Lucasfilm and Solo: A Star Wars Story. We have helped to create an amazing realism to the action, and the crew have done an incredible job”.
VER Project Manager Jonny Hunt handled the implementation and structuring of the LED installation, which centered around a 9mm pixel pitch LED product which is extremely lightweight and bright to deliver a flexible real-time lighting rig.
Rob Bredow, Visual Effects Supervisor and Co-Producer – Solo: A Star Wars Story, comments:
“By combining VER’s LED light panel technology with imagery I captured from the location photography and played back with a color-accurate calibration system developed by Industrial Light & Magic, we were able to create a custom lighting solution that is dynamic and production friendly. The panels gave our DP, Bradford Young and I the ability to light our actors and set pieces with precise, dynamic and interactive sources. For the visual effects team at ILM that meant we could spend our time working with high quality lighting as a starting point for the visual effects compositing.”
Solo: A Star Wars Story had its world premiere on May 10, 2018 in Los Angeles, and also screened on May 15, 2018 at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. The film debuted in selected countries on May 23rd and had its US release on May 25, 2018, the 41st anniversary of the release of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, in which Harrison Ford first appeared as Han Solo.
