U2: The Joshua Tree Tour 2017
U2 in 2? Or, maybe more appropriately, U2 in Two Days …
Well, that is where the ‘two-day’ part comes in. And a shout-out to the amazing VER Camera team and, team spirit, in general. Usually, under normal circumstances, a job of this magnitude would require a minimum of a week of prep time, from initial phone-call to bid/quote process, project development, tech specs, system build-out, packaging, delivery, set-up (ESU), and live production (showtime!). So, how did we end up cutting the time down from two weeks to two days? It’s another great VER service story!
VER’s Rick Carpenito (Senior Technical Advisor, Multi-Camera Entertainment) was on his way to a well-needed respite after many weeks of non-stop production. The engineering team was involved in the production of a DirectTV music show and this gave Rick the chance to pop out of town for a quick vacation – he had no idea just how quick it would be … on Sunday, September 17, as he was driving up the coast, San Francisco bound, the calls came in – two different producers – one urgent request – one end goal: capture U2 at a stadium gig, in San Diego, at the end of the week.
Customer first – always. So much for vacation. This was a big one with an ultratight turn-around that would require a big VER ‘all-hands-on-deck’ approach and, the process needed to start immediately. What else could Rick do? That’s right: He made a U-turn. Or, perhaps, better said: ‘a U2 Turn’! Back to Glendale, on the phone all the way. VER Camera’s Pete Schneider was quickly enlisted as this type of lightning speed prep/set-up would involve and impact his team at Glendale Building 5 Camera Prep. Pete, as always, was up for the action – and adventure, “Bring it on, Ricky!”
MONDAY 9/18 Pull gear and begin prep for a 10-camera system and associated accessories to produce a proprietary, custom VER 35LIVE! multi-camera concert set-up. Pete Schneider in the lead.
TUESDAY 9/19 Full prep day at Glendale (LA Main) Building 5. System complete and tested
WEDNESDAY 9/20 9:00 a.m. – the crew came in to review package, load-up and depart for San Diego
THURSDAY 9/21 Load-in at SDCCU Stadium, San Diego (a multi-purpose stadium facility formerly known as Jack Murphy Stadium, where U2 played many past shows) and pre-show set-up (ESU)
FRIDAY 9/22 U2: The Joshua Tree 40th Anniversary Tour 2017 – Live, with VER 35LIVE!
So, with only two full prep and set-up days, VER Camera came through loud, clear and on time and, from initial phone call to the first ringing guitar chord of the show. In five weekdays, VER was able to add yet another success story to its archive.
“We couldn’t pull off a feat like this without the Swiss watch teamwork of our camera prep team, the engineering staff, and our state-of-the-art camera prep facility. A special thank you to Pete and Ryan Hatch for clearing the way to get this ‘surprise’ last second, large-scale job in – and out the door with an amazing turnaround time – they just ‘made it happen’! Now, can I get back into my car, start driving North, and try to have my vacation again?” commented Rick Carpenito.
